How Do You Know God?

One of the biggest hindrances in our walk with God that keeps us from living the best life He has for us is how we know Him. Take a step back and examine your own life for a second, your prayers, your actions, and your thoughts. What is God to you? What is your focus when approaching Him and your relationship with Him? Do you just go to Him when things aren’t going your way, or do you approach Him every day seeking Him out and His will?

Are you the kind of person that goes to God because of what He can do, or are you the kind of person that pursues after God for who He is.

Matthew 6:33,34 – “But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. So do not worry about tomorrow; for tomorrow will care for itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.”

Jesus said that we are to seek God first, in all that we do. We need to pursue after Him with a consistency that isn’t based on the circumstances and situations around us. We need to be people who follow him during the good times as well as the tough times, we’re not to be affected and influenced by our surroundings. By exercising this, constantly seeking Him, putting His will first, and making it part of our lifestyle, we will begin to develop a foundation in Him, a foundation that is built on His word, and extends to every aspect of who we are.

When circumstances and challenges come into our lives, we don’t have to fear, we don’t have to worry or be shaken, because we’ve been consistently seeking Him and plugging ourselves into His heart and His purpose. Our focus will be set on Him and not the situations around us, because we know that our God is bigger than our finances, we know that our God is bigger than our relationships, we know that our God is bigger than our jobs, and we can put our trust and faith in Him who promises to be our strength, our shield, our light in a dark place, and He will never leave us alone.

Ex. 16:2,3 - The whole company of Israel complained against Moses and Aaron there in the wilderness. The Israelites said, "Why didn't GOD let us die in comfort in Egypt where we had lamb stew and all the bread we could eat? You've brought us out into this wilderness to starve us to death, the whole company of Israel!"

A lot of times in our walk with God we can lose focus on what we are pursuing after. Our attention shifts from seeking God’s will to our own selfish ambitions. Take the Israelites for example after God had brought them out of bondage and captivity in Egypt and started them on their journey to the promise land. One minute they would praise Him when their temporary needs were met, and the next minute they’d complained to Him the instant any sort of obstacle or challenge came in their way. Their relationship with God wasn’t based on a consistency and knowledge of who God was, and an understanding that He would deliver them, and He would supply for them. Rather, it was based on their temporary selfish wants and desires.

It is so easy in life if your foundation isn’t rooted in God and His word to sometimes be like the Israelites who couldn’t see the bigger picture, who couldn’t see ahead of their present circumstances and into what God had for them on the other side.

Deut. 28:1,2 - "Now it shall be, if you diligently obey the LORD your God, being careful to do all His commandments which I command you today, the LORD your God will set you high above all the nations of the earth. "All these blessings will come upon you and overtake you if you obey the LORD your God”. (cont. Deut. 28:3-14)

In all of this, remember that God is a loving God, and He wants His best for His people. Don’t be afraid to ask God for increase, growth or blessings, but check your motivations behind your request. Where’s your heart at? God promises to bless those who diligently seek after Him.

I challenge you today to evaluate your relationship with God and see where your motivation has been. Are you the kind of person that is after God for what you can get, or seeking Him for who He is? I encourage you to strive to build a foundation on Him, to know His heart, and to draw close to Him every chance you get. Seek Him first, set your focus on Him and know that whatever obstacles, difficulties, and challenges the enemy will try and throw in your way, God is bigger than them, and He will be there to carry you through.
