There is one thing that holds this world together. It is not money, a big house, or a fancy car. It’s love. It’s the greatest gift that God has given us for our time here on earth. It destroys hate, and bitterness, and replaces them with a forgiving, heart. God demonstrated the greatest love by sending his Son, Jesus Christ to die on the cross for our sins. The greatest commandment that He asks of us, is to return that love for Him and each other.
Matthew 22:3 'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: Love your neighbor as yourself. All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.
If you love God with every part of your being, you will be inspired to live a life that represents Him well. He is a loving and forgiving God, and we need to demonstrate that in our own lives. In reference to the second part of the verse, think about how often you consider your own benefit and your own comfort before others around you. And most of the time when we do things for others, we have wrong motives. This is where we need to reevaluate our behavior and compare it to the way that God wants us to be. God wants us to be truly selfless. He wants us to put others before ourselves in the same way that Jesus did.
Matthew 5:43 “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you.”
Jesus is very clear throughout the Bible that His greatest desire is to see us walk in love, whether it is convenient or not. He wants you as a Christian, to be set apart from the world in the way that you love those around you. I’m not going to lie and say that it will always be easy. There will continually be someone that wants to hurt you, and your first reaction will be to hurt them back, but God wants you to deny that impulse and instead of acting on hate, show love and forgiveness. It doesn’t make you less of a man or woman to love. It makes you a greater person!
Proverbs 17:17 Friends love through all kinds of weather, and families stick together in all kinds of trouble.
It’s not only important to love your enemies, but also those closest to you. Sometimes we fight the most with the person that we care for the most. When I was growing up, my mother and I fought all of the time, and when I look back at it now, I am so ashamed of how I treated her. I took advantage of her unconditional love, knowing that I could take everything out on her. It was so wrong! Love is a gift- not something to take for granted. We always need to remind our friends and family how much we love them on a daily basis.
We all want to love and be loved, but sometimes we confuse love with other things like lust and jealousy. Those emotions are not from God. These feelings are based on passion and are most of the time self-serving. It’s easy to get them confused when you are caught in the moment, but just remember that true love is a pure love. It is unconditional. If you ever want to know how God views love, Apostle Paul gave a perfect definition of Godly love when he wrote to the Corinthians.
1 Corinthians 13:4-7 Love never gives up. Love cares more for others than for self. Love doesn't want what it doesn't have. Love doesn't strut, doesn't have a swelled head, doesn't force itself on others, Isn't always "me first," doesn't fly off the handle, doesn't keep score of the sins of others, doesn't revel when others grovel, takes pleasure in the flowering of truth, puts up with anything, trusts God always, always looks for the best, never looks back, but keeps going to the end.
This is the kind of love that God has for us. It is a genuine love. God wants us to have this same love for each other. There are people all around us that have never been appreciated, never cared for. They may be starving for someone to love them. I challenge you today, to be conscious of the way that you treat people, whether it be the person that you like or dislike the most. Take a stand, and tell someone you love them today.
